Meet basic requirements
Be at least 18, have six months of full-license driving experience, an acceptable record, and eligible sponsorship.
Complete CDL training
Complete applicable Entry-Level Driver Training and prepare for required knowledge tests.
Medical and drug screening
Meet applicable U.S. Department of Transportation requirements.
Obtain a learner permit
Complete knowledge testing and obtain a Commercial Learner Permit.
Train behind the wheel
Learn inspections, maneuvering, road driving, safe operation, and passenger safety.
Pass the skills tests
Demonstrate that you can safely inspect, maneuver, and operate a school bus.

Do I need a CDL?
Yes. North Carolina school bus drivers need a CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements and must meet applicable certification requirements. Qualified applicants without a CDL can begin through the training and licensing process.
How long does it take?

What if I already have a CDL?
Your path may be shorter. Call us to determine what additional training, endorsements, or certification may be required.
What could disqualify me?
Potential issues include a suspended or disqualified license, certain serious traffic or alcohol/drug-related offenses, failed required drug testing, not meeting DOT medical requirements, or other circumstances that prevent school-bus eligibility.
